Harris Kyriakides has advised on the legal aspects of the bid submitted by the Oak Delta NG Exploration Joint Venture in the Second International Licensing Round for gas explorations in offshore Cyprus.
The Republic of Cyprus announced its Second International Licensing Round, on 11 February 2012, inviting applications from interested parties for hydrocarbon exploration licences and subsequent hydrocarbon exploitation licences. The closing date for applications has been stated as 90 days from the date of publication of the Bid Round in the Official Journal of the European Union. This licensing round has attracted a lot of attention due to recent successful discoveries in the region, including the 20 tcf Leviathan field discovery in Israel. Overall, fifteen bids from companies and joint ventures have been submitted for 9 of the 13 offshore blocks, comprising an exploration area of 51,000 sq.km in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The results of the Second Licensing Round offshore Cyprus are expected to be announced by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus six months after the closing date for applications.
